Bike Sheds and Cycle Shelters on School Routes

Bike Sheds are becoming more and more popular across the UK. Environmentalists are anxious to cut car travel to school and dietitians and PE teachers alike are keen to get kids on to the bikes and out of the car for good.

"It is time that people started using cycle shelters rather than car parks, not everyone gets a grant but the numbers are growing," says head teacher of a West Sussex primary school.

As always there is a 'but'. As cycle shelters become more popular and stylish, so the impending promise of economic decline hinders the governments purchasing of cycle shelters for schools and across the nation. And it is not just in the UK, the problem is widespread. Money is going in a different direction with the recession on. Most of the money that was going into the environment is now going into the pockets of the failing banks and business to try to steer the economy towards a steady state.

If you did get a bike shed this year then you are doing well, it is more than most people got.

The national cycle network is an initiative that aims to create cycle routes across the country and now covers almost half of the population.

Bike it is a new scheme aimed at getting more young people biking to school and on other journeys. Bike it is central to street shelters' philosophy that young people need exercise as much as they need education.
